WRITING EXCERPT: “CAROLINE AT MIDNIGHT”

INT. BAR – NIGHT

Caroline, Ray and Phil are sitting at a table littered with overflowing ashtrays and packs of cigarettes, empty cocktail and shot glasses. A WAITRESS sets down a fresh round of drinks, empties the ashtrays, and leaves. A COUNTRY & WESTERN SONG starts playing on the jukebox.

Ray lights another cigarette, as does Phil. Ray glances at his watch, and taps on the crystal.

                         RAY

              It’s getting late, Caroline.

Caroline now lights a cigarette.

                        CAROLINE

              It’s not that late.

                         RAY

You said ten o’clock, it’s almost

eleven. Ten o’clock is what you said.

Phil drains his shot.

                        PHIL

              If you fucked with us...

                        CAROLINE

              It’ll be okay. Okay?

                        RAY

We’ve got people waiting for us.

                        PHIL

Your friend is holding us up.

                        RAY

              We’re gonna look bad.

                        PHIL

              We don’t like that.

                        CAROLINE

Would you just take it easy.

Another COUNTRY & WESTERN SONG starts playing.

                        RAY

Who the fuck is playing this shit?

Caroline picks up her purse and starts to stand. Ray clamps his hand down on her wrist.

                        RAY

Where do you think you’re going?

                        CAROLINE

I’ve got to go to the bathroom.

                        RAY

              You stay here.

Caroline sits back down. Fresh cigarettes are lit by all.

                        CAROLINE

                      (disgusted)

              Jesus Christ.
