In my years as a Los Angeles based writer,
I have had several original screenplays produced, and numerous
works of fiction published. Although I am not necessarily a
prolific writer, I have developed a fairly substantial body of
work, and I currently have several screenplays in development with my partner, Elaine Ewing. I write only what excites me and
what I think will be a good, marketable film, with my
specialties being crime dramas and
thrillers. Along with my original work, I have done uncredited script doctoring on several projects, with dialogue
being my strong area of expertise. Additionally, I have done
several full rewrites on projects that have had a good core
idea, but have needed to be punched up or better constructed. I
will not waste anyone’s time by taking on a project if I don’t
feel that I can substantially improve the quality of the
material.
First and foremost, I am a movie fan. I
grew up devouring the Warner Brothers gangster classics and
film noir from the 40's and 50's, all films that have greatly influenced my
work. Although I enjoy big budget blockbusters, I find more excitement
and diversity in smaller
independent films. Ultimately all great movies,
regardless of budget, come down to a great story, well executed.
My major influences in terms of dialogue include artists such as
David Mamet, Paddy
Chayefsky and Nicholas Pileggi. I draw from
film noir and classic crime dramas, as well as ambitious indie
films such as "The Wrestler", “Sherry Baby”, and "The Dead
Girl". Each of these films personifies the level of excellence
that can be achieved on a modest budget when given a compelling story.
In addition to screenwriting, I enjoy
and have had success in the area of offbeat comedic fiction. My
work has been published in numerous magazines. Most recently, I,
along with my partner, Elaine Ewing, produced a popular website
featuring topical humor and political satire. I have also been a
staff writer for a National Lampoon Network
affiliated website,
and was published in "National Lampoon's Not Fit For
Print".
